Dance and movement are something that the world needs more of. Through free movement, we open ourselves up, boost our self-confidence and express ourselves. Spirit Studio is created with precisely this purpose in mind.

I am Johanna Maria Karjus, a shuffle dancer, teacher, and promoter of this dance style in Estonia.

Four years ago, while studying in Amsterdam, my friend Josefine tried to teach me shuffle dancing. At first, I resisted. I told myself that I wasn't good enough to learn this new complicated thing. However, when I went home from my friend's place, I couldn't get the dance out of my head and decided to give shuffle a chance. And that style drew me in.

I practiced for several hours every day and couldn't resist dancing whenever I heard music. I wanted so badly to show others what I had learned. In a way, shuffle gave me a purpose in life. The idea of sharing my knowledge, skills, and experiences felt like something I had to do in my life. I found my goal; dance gave me self-awareness. And not just that I am a dancer but also awareness of what I want from life.

The idea of having my own studio emerged about a year after I started sharing my experiences and knowledge of dance with others. I have always felt most comfortable in the role of a teacher, mentor or instructor. The environment where I dance, where I can freely express myself and feel inspired, has always been important to me. I want to create an environment that nurtures and allows. Now I have this opportunity.

In my vision, Spirit Studio specializes in shuffle dance but I also want to introduce other (free)styles such as house, hip-hop, heels and more later on. Additionally, I would like to offer various yoga and pilates classes.

The studio has one large hall (approximately 75m2), a changing room, a shower room, and a small sauna where muscles can be relaxed after training.

 

 

The studio would also be available for events, training sessions, and other rentals.

Spirit Studio is not just an ordinary dance studio, it is also a place where people come together to open themselves up, express themselves, and enjoy life.

By supporting me you give me the opportunity to make my dream come true. The rooms (near Löwenruh Park in Tallinn) have already been secured but support is needed to turn them into a studio.

After the Hooandja project ends, we will immediately start preparing the studio and hopefully we will be in full swing by September 2023.
