Kinomaja Film School is a growing film school in Tallinn, Estonia, that unites young filmmakers age 14-19.
In 2022 two film makers (Eva Kübar ja Liina Särkinen) decided that after teaching film to young people in various schools and camps, it was time to create a film hub for young people, and Kinomaja Film School opened its doors in autumn 2022.
Every year the students form production teams where each person has a role to fill: scriptwriters, camera operators, directors etc. Making films, the students get to meet film professionals and also receive guidance from them. At the beginning of summer the shorts made during the year are premiered in a cinema in Tallinn and then are sent to various festivals.
Kinomaja Film School, however, has broader goals than just schoolwork and therefore one of the biggest projects of the year is organising the nationwide and also an international School Film Festival (KOOLIFILM). We believe that the film language is a very important way of expressing oneself and therefore we have revived the School Film Festival (KOOLIFILM) that years ago was organised by Kinobuss (a well- known film education organisation in Estonia). The warm reception of the last year festival proved that young people really need a festival like that.
The second KOOLIFILM festival will take place in Tallinn (in Kino Artis) on 11-13 October 2024 and will again be organised by the brave students of Kinomaja Film School. The goal of the festival is to create a platform for young filmmakers age 14-19 for showcasing their work and participating in motivating workshops led by professionals. This year we are also expecting an exciting special guest: Krista Koger, who has Estonian roots and is a special effects specialist from Toronto (Canada).
The films selected by the youth jury will compete in various categories and the Audience Award will also be given out. English subtitles will be added to films to enable foreign youngsters as well as other film fans to understand everything.
KOOLIFILM has also not forgotten school teachers who will also have a chance to participate in a specially tailored film workshop that will inspire them to use the film language in their subject in school. The films made during that workshop will also be screened at the festival in a special category “Teacher’s Film”.
KOOLIFILM is a festival from youth to youth that is organised mainly by Kinomaja Film School students, but has a much wider reachr. Young people who are interested in organising the festival, but who do not attend the film school, can also join the team to gain valuable work experience. Our friendly partners who provide spaces for workshops and some of the awards, are Estonian Academy of Arts, Baltic Film- and Media School, Canon Overall and Kinomaja Bar and Stage. In addition we welcome all the other help!
The 1st financial goal (4000 euros) to be collected during our Hooandja campaign will let us:
- cover the transportation, accommodation and workshop related expenses of our special guests;
- partially cover transportation and accommodation related expenses of the young filmmakers coming from further Estonian places, for whom it's financially difficult to come to Tallinn for two days. (E.g., last year we managed to accommodate 10 young filmmakers from various Estonian locations.)
The 2nd financial goal (3000 euros) to be collected during our Hooandja campaign will let us:
- design festival trophies with the help of young artists. We plan to start a new tradition with ordering our festival trophies from various young student artists, and we would like to cover their costs.
- rent rooms needed for workshops and screenings;
- organise catering for our brave volunteers;
- make festival T-shirts so that participants could wear the inspiration of the festival for a long time;
- organise a party for the young filmmakers, which will take place during the evening of the 1st festival day and will give young participants coming from various places an opportunity to meet and exchange ideas and experiences. We hope that this party will result in many fruitful cooperation projects we can enjoy at the next festival!
- make a video of the behind the scenes of the festival, which we will gladly share also with our supporters.
The names of all supporters (upon their consent) will be mentioned in an exciting festival film that will open the awards ceremony on the last day of the festival. It is possible to purchase individual tickets for screenings and workshops, or you can buy a festival pass, which includes all screenings and workshop lectures. The festival pass includes 3 film screenings, and an entries to the evening filmmakers' party at Kinomaja, a workshop-lecture, and the closing ceremony.
Thank you in advance for your support!
